Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂ eq)

THEequivalent carbon dioxide, or CO₂ eq, is a measure that represents all greenhouse gases converting them into the equivalent amount of CO₂.

According to the Kyoto Protocol, there are not only one, but six greenhouse gases that all contribute to the greenhouse effect and therefore to global warming: carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (laughing gas, N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC/HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC/PFC) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

To make them easier to understand, and because greenhouse gases have a different effect on the climate, they are compared with the effect of a unit of CO₂. So when we say that yours Carbon footprint It is, for example, 100 t CO₂ eq, we are also calculating the other gases relevant to the climate.
