What is a Science Based Target?

I Science Based Targets (SBTs) are a series of decarbonization objectives with well-defined guidelines that help companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in order to prevent the negative impact of climate change. Through the initiative Science Based Target (Science Based Targets Initiative or SBTi), it is possible to validate the emission reduction objectives that your company has defined, in order to obtain a verification that the planned decarbonization path is aligned with the Paris agreement. It is precisely compliance with the Paris agreement, which provides for containing the increase in the global average temperature well below 2°C, that guarantees that the company's decarbonization objectives are based on scientific foundations, or as is often said,”science-based goals”.

What is the Science Based Target initiative?

THEScience Based Targets initiative (SBTi), launched in 2015, promotes the definition of science-based decarbonization objectives to strengthen the competitive position of companies that want to switch to a low-carbon economy. The companies that participate in SBTi are committed to setting an emissions reduction target in line with the Paris agreement, committing themselves to limiting global warming to 1.5 ºC or well below 2 ºC.

The IScience Based Targets Initiative is a collaboration between CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is one of the commitments of the We Mean Business Coalition.

Why should my company set a science-based goal?

Establishing a science-based goal, companies can show customers their commitment to sustainability and their fight against climate change in a more concrete way, becoming pioneers in their sector. This could also encourage other companies, customers and suppliers to join and push governments to take further action in the fight against global warming. As demonstrated by SBTi, the definition of scientific objectives also has economic benefits for companies, increases resilience against regulation, increases investor confidence and stimulates innovation and competitiveness.
